The 80/20 Rule

Here is some very good news. The fact that we are alive today means that our DNA and gene pool is a survivor !  Our genes have survived for thousands of years, we have made it through ice ages, plagues, wars and famine and we are still here. So why are we always preaching about more exercise, eating your greens, avoiding wheat and avoiding dairy when our ancestors were the ones who survived being chased by saber toothed tigers and being bitten by the plague flea ?

Most of what we talk about is linked to particular disease processes. i.e for people who are developing problems or have developed them already. If you are among these people, then you may be next on the pile of eradicated gene pools. For everyone else who has no aches pains or maladies, then this is for you …

The secret is that, most of the time, the body is dying to be healthy. The smallest wave of goodness is lapped up by the body and the pendulum of improving health ensues. The smallest investment of time and energy into your body is rewarded with bountiful health and happiness. The problem is that many people are not willing to invest any time into looking after their health. This, alas, is when disease follows.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF 20% OF THE TIME AND DO WHATEVER ELSE YOU WANT 80% OF THE TIME AND YOUR BODY AND MIND WILL LOOK AFTER YOU 100% OF THE TIME !

Here are some tips for the 20% ers:

ROTATE:

  • Rotate your foods, and try not to eat the same trigger foods too often i a short period of time.
  • Avoid having wheat 3 times in one day. For example, if you have toast for breakfast, try no to have pasta for lunch.
  • Or should you have had a rich pudding full of dairy for dinner, try and avoid having cereal with milk for breakfast or milk in your coffee.
  • I could go on about this but just be mindful of what you are putting into your body.

MODERATE:

  • This is a  very simple rule to follow: Don’t eat or drink too much of anything other than water and green vegetables.
  • Spread less butter on your toast. Grate less cheese on your pasta.
  • Use a smaller pinch of salt on your meat.Have a spoonful of chocolate mousse not the whole thing.
  • Have a single shot cappuccino instead of a double shot. Water your wine down, or alternate each glass with a glass of water.
  • Spread out your cigarettes to two hour intervals instead of one.

ACTIVATE:

  • Children that fidget have between 3%-5% less body fat than children who don’t. So keep moving and you will keep your weight down, your heart healthy and your muscles strong.
  • Take the stairs not the lift, walk instead of catching a cab.
  • If you do catch a cab wiggle your toes and shrug your shoulders,
  • Pull in your tummy and take some deep energizing calming breaths when sitting at you desk.

CONTEMPLATE:

  • Give your brain some happy calm time.
  • Do whatever makes you happy.
  • Meditate, sing, breath, laugh, rest and play.
  • Just give your mind some down time.

It is an easy investment for years of health and happiness. Don’t ignore it, just do it !!
